Eels are fascinating creatures with an incredible life cycle; preleptocephalus, leptocephalus, glass eel, elver, yellow eel and silver eel are distinctly different stages of life separated by dramatic changes in morphology and probably also in physiology. Eels are catadromous semelparous species that are born, spawn and die in the ocean but spend most of their life in inland fresh waters, thus facing two long journeys in opposite directions during their life. Such a mysterious life history of eels has aroused our curiosity for more than a century, and although efforts in Europe and Japan have revealed the ecology of their migration to some extent, little is yet known about their physiology during this migratory period. Indeed, since the pioneering works of Homer H. Schmidt in the 1930’s, eels have attracted the interest of many physiologists, especially those studying various aspect of adaptive physiology.
